Is the Amharic alphabet the same as the Tigrinya alphabet?

They share the Ge'ez script, but the inventories differ. Amharic uses 34 letter families; Tigrinya uses 32 and drops several characters Amharic keeps. They are separate languages with different vocabulary and grammar — reading one gives you the script for the other, not the language. Do I need to speak Amharic to learn the script?

No. The fidel is highly regular — each character has one reliable sound — so you can learn to read it before you can hold a conversation. Many heritage learners do exactly this: they already understand spoken Amharic and only need the script.
